1. MBR research process

In the 1960s, the combination of activated sludge bioreactor and cross-flow membrane filtration realized the application of MBR in wastewater treatment for the first time. In 1989, researchers placed membrane modules inside bioreactors, breaking through the progress of integrated MBR reactors. Since the 1990s, due to the continuous improvement of membrane flux, membrane pollution control technology and membrane materials have also been greatly improved, the cost of membrane bioreactors is getting lower and lower, and this process has gradually received attention. As of 2006, the total value of membrane bioreactors used worldwide reached US $ 216 million. Relatively speaking, China's development started late, but its development trend is rapid, and its growth rate is far faster than the average growth rate in the world. It is currently well used in many practical sewage treatments.


2. Application of MBR

(1) Application of MBR in urban sewage treatment

In the late 1990s, with the emergence of integrated MBR, the application of membrane reactors in urban sewage treatment has been rapidly developed. As of 2005, 219 MBR urban sewage treatment projects have been completed in North America. Although China started late, it has developed rapidly. At present, there are many projects in operation or under construction in China.

(2) Application of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment

Compared with urban sewage treatment, MBR has more advantages in the field of industrial wastewater treatment. According to statistics, MBR currently accounts for 41% of industrial wastewater treatment, and is widely used in printing and dyeing, coking, electroplating, oil refining, food, petrochemicals, beer, medicine and landfill leachate.
